How the Solar Rebate Works
The rebate is part of the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), where Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) provide the up-front discount on the cost of installing a solar system. These STCs vary based on the system size, installation location, and the year of installation. Each year, the number of STCs available per system decreases, which means a lower rebate.
Currently, the value of these STCs can vary, but it’s been hovering around $36-$38 per certificate after fees. If you install a solar system in 2024, you can benefit from the current rate. However, come January 1, 2025, that same system will receive fewer STCs, translating to a reduced rebate.
Current and Future Rebate Examples
2024 Example:
A 10kW solar system installed in the Illawarra this year qualifies for 96 STCs, which, at $36 per certificate, gives you a rebate of about $3,456 which is discounted off the total cost of your Solar System.
2025 Example:
Starting January 1, 2025, the same 10kW system in Illawarra will only qualify for 82 STCs, which, at the same $36 per certificate, results in a rebate of about $2,952—a $504 reduction from the 2024 rebate.
